Can I audition for more than one group?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely! We encourage everyone to audition for several groups here at IU. Auditions are usually staggered within the same week to ensure everyone has several opportunities to join our a cappella community! If you are invited to callbacks for more than one group, you might be asked to share which (if any) group you have a preference for. However, you will only be able to select one group to join in the end.

What should I prepare for my audition?

Make sure to fill out the Audition Form prior to your audition slot!

You should prepare two songs (1 verse + 1 chorus of each)
Showcase any beatboxing abilities (optional)

Make sure to choose songs that really make your voice shine. We encourage you to prepare at least one popular song (this includes Rock ‘n’ Roll, Pop, Alternative, Country, etc.) Musical theater songs are acceptable but not preferred, and may only be used as your 2nd audition song. Please do not prepare any classical music. We also ask that you come with your songs memorized.

What should I expect during my audition?

Auditions will be closed to the public. You will be performing for all LF members during your audition. We will ask you to state your name, major, hometown, and year in school. We will also range-test you using a few simple warm-ups before you sing your first-choice song. Your audition will take 5-10 minutes.

What are rehearsals like?

We typically rehearse every Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday (~7 hours weekly).  However, rehearsal times and days may be changed to prepare for performances or accommodate members' schedules. The commitment level to Ladies First is high, but it doesn't prevent you from doing other activities and academics always comes first! We love to have fun during rehearsals as long as we stay productive.

Any tips for my audition?

Be early! We will start on time.

Please bring water, snacks, and any homework you have! Audition slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so there may be a wait time.

Befriend your fellow auditionees (they may be your future a cappella sisters!)

Don’t be nervous! Every member of Ladies First has gone through the audition process and fully understands how nerve-wracking it can be. Know that we are all on your side rooting for you to do your best!
